History Sunday Series 2010-11 PDF Print E-mail

Six Presentations on varying topics related to Douglas County History are scheduled for November of 2010 and January, February, and March 2011 usually on the second Sunday of the month. History Sunday presentations begin at 2 p.m. Sunday in the Douglas Country Historical Society Hall at 1101 John Avenue in Superior. Admission is $3 per person; free admission for Society Members. Refreshments served.

Finding A Home: Polish-Americans in Superior, WI

Theodora (Teddie) Meronek, local historian, co-author of Superior Catholics: Memoirs of a Parochial Education, and Polish-American citizen of Superior, presents a history of the vibrant Polish-American community in Superior.

Superior as a Good Neighbor: The Great Fire of 1918

In 1918, Len Schmidt's mother found refuge from the Great Fire in Superior, as did hundreds of other people. The City of Superior, both privately and politically, provided support to the fire refugees for many months. Our presenters Len and Marlys Schmidt joined a delegation this year from the Moose Lake Historical Society who gave a formal thanks to the Superior City Council for the city's role. 

 

Sunday, March 14th - 2 p.m.

In honor of Women's History month, our final History Sunday program for the season is “Letters from thePast:  Words from Women in Superior’sEarly Years.”  DCHS members, JeanneFrodesen, Cari Reder and Vi LaBounty will read letters from pioneer women,Sarah Fairchild Dean, Mary Clara Post and Cornelia Roy.  This collection of letters dating fromSuperior’s formative years, 1855 to 1858, are correspondence between SarahFairchild Dean and the other women.
